The county of Øvre Eiker is surrounded by beautiful countryside. The rich cultural heritage og the area means it has been the site of some important
finds, such as the Hoen Treasure - the largest find of gold from
the Viking Era.
Hill forts and prehistoric burial grounds can also be found
here.
In the 17th century, Eiker was a power centre in Norway
in the
Danish Era. In 1624, Christian IV, the king of Denmark/Norway,
commanded that a road should be built from Kongsberg to Drammen via
Eiker.
It was Norway's first national highway and is today referred to
as the
Silver Road (Sølvveien).
Eikers industry has produced many beautiful products, including
the
famous glass objects made by Nøstetangen Glasværk
(1741-1777).
You are also welcome to the vast opportunities for hiking,
biking, sports
and fishing in rivers and tarns. The ferry MS Eikern offers
an exciting
boat trip through some of the most beautiful countryside in
Norway
every summer.
Have a good time and welcome to Øvre
Eiker!
